One of the most recent, large-scale projects undertaken at our Health Centre– the installation of a new, electronic medication safety system – was made possible with your support.
“This new system has significantly changed the way we manage and dispense medication here at St. Joe’s said Matt Smith, Manager of Complex Continuing Care and Pharmacy. “On any given day, our patients may require more than 500 different types of medications. With so many of our patients on complex and ever changing prescriptions, it is imperative they receive the right medication, in the right dosage, at the right time – each and every time.”
After years of planning, this new system is in place. Barcode technology tracks all prescriptions, and staff use fingerprint identification pads in order to access medicines. Alarms and flashing lights act as guides through each step of the process – reducing the risk of medication errors and allowing patients access to medications faster. The new system also packages medication into individual dosages, creating less waste and saving money.
“The safety of our patients is always our top priority. Over the next 10 years, the number of men and women over the age of 65 in our region will grow significantly,” said Kathy Tschirhart, Vice President of Patient Services. “At St. Joe’s we are committed to ensuring we are in the best possible position to meet the needs of our community today and tomorrow. Having a medication delivery system that is among the best in the province, helps us do just that.”
Your gifts to St. Joe’s help our patients and residents every day, in so many ways. On behalf of our patients, residents and their families – thank you for believing in St. Joe’s and for helping to ensure the continued health of our community. Together, we’re better!
