Tractor Tug for Tots Supports Children Diagnosed with Autism
For families whose children have recently been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), the search for timely support can be overwhelming. With many programs facing wait times that can stretch years, families are often left navigating their child’s early development on their own. St. Joseph’s Health Centre is working to change that by offering immediate, accessible help when it is needed most.
St. Joe’s Caregiver-Mediated Early Years Program provides early intervention for children under four years old with a diagnosis of ASD. The program focuses on playful, connection-based learning and teaches parents simple, meaningful strategies they can use daily to boost communication. The program fills a critical gap and helps children learn and build communication skills at a critical age.
Recently, thanks to a generous $16,000 donation from the University of Guelph’s Tractor Tug for Tots fundraising event, the therapy room where this program takes place was transformed. Calming wall murals, new padded floor mats and brand-new storage cupboards for sensory equipment have converted the space into a safer, more welcoming environment that can better support play-based learning.
“This program is often one of the first supports families receive after their preschool-aged child is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Thanks to the incredible fundraising efforts of the Tractor Tug for Tots event, our space now truly reflects the care we want families to experience from the moment they arrive. Their support has given our clients the gift of comfort and hope during a very important time in their journey.”

Now, children coming to the program have a secure, comforting space where they can move, climb and explore, and parents are welcomed into a room that reflects the high level of care St. Joe’s Speech-Language Pathology Team delivers. For families taking their first steps after an ASD diagnosis, this thoughtfully designed space helps them feel supported from the moment they walk through the door.
